Sister Sally asked about the side door to our Houghton house. I told her it was a gnome size door. It's plenty big to fit a gnome, even when he is riding on his trusty frog steed. We got this guy on sale at sears last fall and it looked like the perfect lawn ornament for the Houghton house.
THe college kids don't think it's too cool - BUT WE SURE DO!!!

he is SO excited to ride that frog!!!
Well who wouldn't be!!
That's a neat door. Does it go into the basement? In old houses they often had a door that went right to the basement if there were no stairs on the inside. Maybe they could also use it to deliver coal.
It goes to the basement, but there is a one more door to get into the basement. I suspect this was the entrance to get coal into the house. We have an additional stair from the kitchen to the basement.
If anyone has a free week over the summer, let us know - The rent is cheap! (IE - mow the lawn!)
I think this is the only picture I've seen of the Houghton House. Sounds famous, do you have more? Sure looks clean and inviting!
Our house in Villa Park had a coal chute, so did our house in Romeo. There was a little metal door about the size of the basement window and there was a stone "slide" for them to just dump the coal into a small room in the basement. Of course, by the time I lived in either of those houses, they were no longer heated by coal.
